A volume that has a one-to-one association with physical tape media and is used directly by z/OS applications. Physical volumes may reside in an Automated Tape Library Dataserver (ATLDS) or be kept on shelf storage either at vault sites or within the data centre where they can be mounted on stand-alone tape drives.
