Environment variable

(1) A variable that defines an aspect of the operating environment for a process. For example, environment variables can define the home directory, the command search path, the terminal in use, or the current time zone.
(2) A variable that is included in the current software environment and is therefore available to any called programme that requests it.
(3) A variable that specifies how an operating system or another programme runs, or the devices that the operating system recognizes.
