Root directory
(1) In the operating systems for personal computers, the directory on a disc or diskette that contains the list of files stored on that disc or diskette. If more than one directory is on a disc or diskette, the root directory is at the top of the hierarchy of directories. The root directory is created by the operating system when the disc or diskette is formatted.
(2) The directory that contains all other directories in the system.
