In iSeries, a disc storage device that is protected from data loss by the use of a Redundant Array of Independent discs (RAID). An iSeries host does not mirror a volume configured as a protected volume, while it does mirror all volumes configured as unprotected volumes. The ESS, however, can be configured to indicate that an iSeries volume is protected or unprotected and provide it with RAID protection in either case.
