File name substitution

In the AIX operating system, the process in which the shell substitutes an alphabetically sorted list of file names in the place of a pattern. The shell recognises a pattern (as opposed to a file name) by the occurrence of a word (character string) with either of the following characteristics: (a) the word contains any of these characters: *, ?, (, or (, (b) the word begins with this character: .
