Connection-oriented network service (CONS)

A type of networked data communication in which a dedicated connexion between two peer entities is established before data is transferred. A connection-oriented service consists of three phases: establishment, data transfer, and release. The two networks exchange address information only while the connexion is being established. See also connectionless service.
