About 80% of the Earth's crust, the outermost layer, is of igneous origin, closely related to volcanism. Recent advances in volcanology include improved understanding of eruptive phenomena; refinements in techniques of volcano monitoring, data processing, and interpretation; demonstrated capability to mitigate volcano hazards; and direct assessment of the impact of large explosive eruptions on global climate.
