variable number tandem repeats
1) Linear arrangement of multiple copies of short repeated DNA sequences that vary in length and are highly polymorphic, making them useful as markers in linkage analysis.
2) A tandem repeat from a single genetic locus in which the number of repeated DNA segments varies from individual to individual and is used for identification purposes (as in DNA fingerprinting).
