roasting furnace

A furnace in which finely ground ores and concentrates are roasted to eliminate sulfur or other elements or compounds; heat is provided by the burning sulfur. The essential feature is free access of air to the charge, by having a shallow bed that is continually rabbled. Many types have been devised; multiple hearth is the most widely used.
