Nitrogen is an element of contrasts. In ecological systems, nitrogen is both abundant and limiting, is an essential nutrient and a pollutant, and is driven by natural and human-induced ecological processes. This makes nitrogen an important yet complex element at the center of a number of environmental issues, and one that is of increasing concern in forest conservation.
