maximum contaminant levels (MCL's)
From the Safe Drinking Water Act, the term means the specific limitations on the amount of a contaminant in a public water system. For each contaminant, the EPA sets "maximum contaminant levels goals" which are defined as the level of contaminant at which no known or anticipated adverse affects on the health of persons occur and which allows an adequate margin of safety.
