air

The opposite of vacuum. A major part of beam generation takes place in a vacuum, which is maintained by the vacion pumps. If a pump fails, or some breach occurs, the system is said to “go down to air. ” A portion of beam generation takes place in air, after the beam leaves the bend magnet, before it strikes the target, and then strikes the ion chamber.
