Proctor penetration needle

A quick and convenient method for testing the resistance of a fine-grained soil to penetration at a standard rate of 1/2 in/s (1.27 cm/s). Needles from 1 to 0.05 in2(6.5 to 0.3 cm2) area are used, and a spring balance indicates the pressure required for the needle to penetrate the soil.
