Malagasy

Malagasy is the official language of Madagascar. It is a member of the Austronesian language family, and of this, the Malayo-Polynesian branch. Malagasy speakers reside primarily in Madagascar, Comoros, Réunion and Mayotte. Linguists have been unable to explain why an island the size of Madagascar only has one language, while similar islands of Africa have several.
