Heidsieck 1907 Diamant Bleu cuvee was originally the wine for the Imperial Court of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. During the First World War, the Swedish freighter Jönköping was chartered to deliver fine spirits and wine to the Imperial Court of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia via the Swedish port of Gävle. On November 3, 1916, the ship was torpedoed by a German submarine and sank to its final resting place 67 meters below the surface of the Baltic Sea.
Onboard were over 2,000 bottles of Heidsieck 1907 Diamant Bleu cuvée. The ideal conditions of the cold, dark and relatively low pressure sea floor preserved the bottles for over 80 years, until the shipwreck was discovered by Swedish divers in 1997.
Most of the 2000 bottles were salvaged from the ship and members of the diving team opened some bottles as a test and were elated to discover the Champagne was delicious. Since then, many of the bottles have been sold at auctions worldwide, averaging a price of $3,700 each. They are a historic novelty that makes the ultimate purchase for many wine collectors.
