A professional who directs and coordinates activities of news department of radio or television network or station. Responsibilities include:

  • Confers with executives and production staff members regarding budget, station policy, news coverage of special events, and production problems.
  • Originates or approves feature ideas and sends ideas to personnel of assignment department for implementation.
  • Monitors news development and reviews edited copy and news film.
  • Approves program content or issues directions for changes or modification.
  • Coordinates news staff activities with radio or television programming, traffic, and film editing departments.
  • Hires, discharges, and evaluates performance of news staff.
  • May operate video equipment to review and approve news film or tape, using knowledge of usage of equipment.
  • May write or type news copy, letters, and memos.
  • May perform production duties or directly supervise those performing them in smaller station.
  • May be designated according to media as Director, Radio News; Director, Television News.
