free field stress

The stresses existing in rock before the excavation of any mine opening. In general, these stresses are known to be influenced primarily by the weight of the overlying 1284 material, the relation of the opening of the rock masses around it (depth of overburden, etc.), the physical characteristics to the surrounding rock, and tectonic forces.
