drill collar

A length of extra heavy wall drill rod or pipe connected to a drill string directly above the core barrel or bit, the weight of which is used to impose the major part of the load required to make the bit cut properly. A drill collar is usually of nearly the same outside 993 diameter as the bit or core barrel on which it is used. Not to be confused with guide rod.
