(1) In Open System Interface (OSI), a multipart hierarchical name that can be used to identify OSI objects globally. The distinguished name of an object is formed from the sequence of its relative distinguished names (RDNs) and the name of its superior object.
(2) The name that uniquely identifies an entry in a directory. A distinguished name is made up of attribute:value pairs, separated by commas.
(3) A set of name-value pairs (such as CN=person's name and C=country or region) that uniquely identifies an entity in a digital certificate.

(1) In Open Systems Interconnection (OSI), the part of an application process that contains the OSI communications functions. Application entities can have more than one application association. See also application entity title.
(2) A logical grouping of application data into a unit with a discrete function, such as a case, contract, contact, or item. An application data entity is an application's way of organising data in database tables into units or objects that correspond to business functions.
(3) An independent, self-contained, distinct set of software components that perform specific tasks.

(1) An occurrence of significance to a task or system. Events can include completion or failure of an operation, a user action, or the change in state of a process. See also indicator collection, resource model, journal receiver, receiver.
(2) A change to an application entity that triggers a business object. This business object, which contains data and a verb, becomes an event in the WebSphere business integration system. See also application event.
(3) In the Notes Calendar, an entry with a duration of at least one day. For example, an all-day meeting or a vacation is an event.
(4) A transition in database activity caused by users, applications, or the database manager. Events include connections, deadlocks, and transactions.
(5) A change to data in an enterprise information system (EIS) that results in an update to the event store. The adapter processes event store information to deliver business objects from the EIS to the endpoints that subscribe to those business objects.
