(1) In Backup, Recovery, and Media Services, a place where media and containers can be stored awaiting expiration or movement to another location such as off-site storage, vaults, or long-term (permanent) retention. Backup, Recovery, and Media Services has two predefined locations that can be overridden by the user: 1) *HOME, the system keyword for the on-site library (or home location); and 2) VAULT, a default storage location that refers to the default off-site storage location.
(2) Data elements within a storage system that can be mapped to (a) the schema of the storage system, such as a column in a database table, (b) an aggregation of data, such as a table, or (c) a way of accessing the data, such as a transaction identifier. See also storage system, user key.
(3) A location physically separate from the removable media library where volumes are stored for disaster recovery, backup, and vital records management. See also inventory management.

(1) In the DCE X/Open Directory Service, a defined data structure that is used to represent an OM attribute type and a single value.
(2) See screen recognition criteria.
(3) A PL/I control block that holds information such as string lengths, array subscript bounds, and area sizes, and is passed from one PL/I routine to another during run time.
(4) A small, unsigned integer that a UNIX system uses to identify an object supported by the kernel. Descriptors can represent files, pipes, sockets, and other I/O streams.
(5) An XML file that describes the content of a component or resource. See also installable unit deployment descriptor, media descriptor.
(6) A skeleton from which an IMS control block is dynamically built. A user descriptor can provide user options and queue names.
Industry:Software
(1) A unit of work that allows for the remote preparation and execution of SQL statements.
(2) The form of SQL distributed processing in which the application is on a system different from the relational database, and a single application server services all remote unit-of-work requests within a single logical unit of work.
(3) A unit of work that lets a user or an application programme read or update data at one location per unit of work. RUOW supports access to one database within a unit of work. An application programme can update several remote databases, but it can access only one database within a unit of work. See also transaction.
Industry:Software
(1) In Backup, Recovery, and Media Services, a special operation (*EXIT) available in the control group to permit automatic processing of predefined user routines during control group processing.
(2) A point in a programme at which a user exit routine may be given control.
(3) A customised routine that takes control at a specific point in an application. See also installation exit.

(1) In the DDS for a join logical file, the first physical file specified on the JFILE keyword. See also secondary file.
(2) For certain types of join operations using Query, the first of all files that are joined in a query definition. The data from this file is used in every record formed by a join specification.
(3) In RPG, if specified, the first file from which RPG reads a record. In multifile processing, the primary file is used to determine whether the MR indicator is set on. See also full procedural file.
Industry:Software
(1) A unit of work that allows SQL statements to be submitted to multiple relational database management systems, but no more than one system per SQL statement.
(2) In a distributed process, all processing between two syncpoints taken by two or more intercommunicating transactions using a two-phase commit protocol. A DUW is a distributed LUW.
Industry:Software
(1) In Backup, Recovery, and Media Services, a user-defined storage site where media and containers can be stored awaiting reuse or movement to other locations.
(2) A particular occurrence or example of a location definition. If there is a location definition called USA Call Center, an example of a location would be Toledo Call Center.
Industry:Software
(1) In the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) X/Open Directory Service (XDS), the component of an attribute that indicates the type of information given by that attribute. Because it is an object identifier, it is unique among other attribute types.
Industry:Software
(1) A unit to which resources and locks are allocated. An AP involves running one or more programs.
(2) In OSI, the part of an application that resides in a single node. An application process consists of one or more application entities and other parts of an application that are unrelated to OSI data communications.
Industry:Software
(1) In Backup, Recovery, and Media Services, an entry in a control group that contains similar items such as libraries, folders, or objects.
(2) A type of object, which DB2 utilities can process, that identifies multiple table spaces, multiple index spaces, or both. A list is defined with the LISTDEF utility control statement.
