The National Library of Medicine (NLM), on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, is the world's largest medical library. The Library collects materials and provides information and research services in all areas of biomedicine and health care.
1) General term for a number of inherited defects of amino acid metabolism in which there is a deficiency or absence of pigment in the eyes, skin, or hair.
2) A genetic condition marked by little or none of the pigment melanin in the skin, hair, and/or eyes. People with albinism may have vision problems and white hair, pink or blue eyes, and pale skin.

1) general term for invasion and growth of microorganisms in bodily tissues.
2) Invasion and multiplication of germs in the body.

1) Genes are transcribed into segments of RNA (ribonucleic acid), which are translated into proteins. Both RNA and proteins are products of the expression of the gene and, in some cases, can be quantified to determine the activity of the gene; abnormal amounts of gene product are often associated with the presence of a disease-causing mutation.
2) The biochemical material, either RNA or protein, resulting from expression of a gene. The amount of gene product is used to measure how active a gene is; abnormal amounts can be correlated with disease-causing alleles.
Industry:Health care
1) Genes in the body that can suppress or block the development of cancer.
2) Genes that normally restrain cell growth but, when missing or inactivated by mutation, allow cells to grow uncontrolled.
3) A tumor suppressor gene directs the production of a protein that is part of the system that regulates cell division. The tumor suppressor protein plays a role in keeping cell division in check. When mutated, a tumor suppressor gene is unable to do its job, and as a result uncontrolled cell growth may occur. This may contribute to the development of a cancer.
Industry:Health care
1) Genes which regulate or circumscribe the activity of other genes; specifically, genes which code for proteins (repressors or activators) which regulate the genetic transcription of the structural genes and/or regulatory genes.
2) A gene that regulates the expression of one or more structural genes by controlling the production of a protein (as a genetic repressor) which regulates their rate of transcription.
Industry:Health care
1) Genes which result in the premature death of the organism; dominant lethal genes kill heterozygotes, whereas recessive lethal genes kill only homozygotes.
2) Any gene in which a mutation will result in the premature death of the organism carrying it.
3) A gene that in some (as homozygous) conditions may prevent development or cause the death of an organism or its germ cells -- called also lethal factor, lethal mutant, lethal mutation.

1) Genetic drift is a mechanism of evolution. It refers to random fluctuations in the frequencies of alleles from generation to generation due to chance events. Genetic drift can cause traits to be dominant or disappear from a population. The effects of genetic drift are most pronounced in small populations.
2) Random changes in gene frequency especially in small populations when leading to preservation or extinction of particular genes.

1) Germ cell of the male sex.
2) The male reproductive cell, formed in the testicle. A sperm unites with an egg to form an embryo.
