The National Library of Medicine (NLM), on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, is the world's largest medical library. The Library collects materials and provides information and research services in all areas of biomedicine and health care.
1) A white patch lesion found on a mucous membrane that cannot be scraped off. Leukoplakia is generally considered a precancerous condition, however its appearance may also result from a variety of hereditary diseases.
2) (loo-ko-PLAY-kee-a) A white patch that may develop on mucous membranes such as the cheek, gums, or tongue and may become cancerous.

1) A yellowish pigmentation of the skin, tissues, and certain body fluids caused by the deposition of bile pigments that follows interference with normal production and discharge of bile (as in certain liver diseases) or excessive breakdown of red blood cells (as after internal hemorrhage or in various hemolytic states).
